Lightning Protection System

When it comes to your
safety, we’re not taking any chances.

The Park District is equipped with state-of-the-art weather monitoring systems to help protect your family and safeguard your moments.

Take the Right Steps to Stay Safe

Safety Guidelines

No outdoor location is safe during a thunderstorm.

We encourage all visitors to follow these weather-related safety guidelines, to help ensure the safety of visitors, employees, and community members.

About the system

When Thunder Roars, Go Indoors:

  • Seek substantial shelter immediately (buildings, enclosed vehicles)
  • Avoid pavilions, dugouts, or open structures

Before You Go:

  • Check weather forecasts and radar
  • Know where the nearest substantial shelter is located

The Park District selected Thor Guard to help us improve park safety and safeguard our visitors, staff, and community members from dangerous weather. Their state-of-the-art technology is based on decades of lightning research to deliver the highest quality weather predictions possible.

WHAT IF IT DOESN’T SOUND?

If you see lightning or hear thunder, act as if the system has already alerted. Lightning can develop faster than any detection technology. Always follow the simple rule: if you see lightning or hear thunder, stop outdoor activity and move to a fully enclosed building or hard‑topped vehicle.

HOW IS IT MAINTAINED

The Thor Guard system is maintained on a regular schedule. Equipment is inspected, tested, and calibrated by trained Park District staff and contracted technicians. After significant storms, staff review how the system performed and schedule maintenance if sensors, sirens, or communication links need service.

LOCATIONS & COVERAGE

Thor Guard sensors and sirens are installed at key HE Parks sites, including major athletic complexes, community facilities, and high‑use outdoor areas. Each installation has a defined coverage radius, but coverage can vary based on terrain and nearby structures. Because of this, visitors should still monitor sky conditions and follow standard lightning safety practices in every park.
